Moors Magazine, Netherlands

January 15, 2010 CD Reviews, Sangria CD Reviews

Moors MagazineTranslation:

The subtitle of Mariah Parker’s album Sangria reads “An Indo Latin Jazz Musical Experience”. Parker also plays in the world fusion group Ancient Future led by Matthew Montfort, and Montfort and members of the band also perform here, on Parker’s solo-album. Parker wrote all compositions, and plays piano and santur (a kind of Indian dulcimer played with hammers – similar to the instrument known as the Dutch hakkebord). Light oriental rhythms of the tabla are combined with heavy, dark sounds, almost seeming like those of a traditional chamber orchestra, while Parker herself plays piano in a jazzy manner. World fusion with a jazzy undertone results, with really beautiful arrangements that don’t quickly get boring. Adventurous music, in which the half worlds appear to blow in the wind, a beautiful flying musical carpet. Two excerpts below prove this.

Original:
