July 28, 2024 CD Reviews, Windows Through Time CD Reviews

Pianist and composer Mariah Parker has an impressive new album titled Windows Through Time, recorded with her Indo Latin Jazz Ensemble. It features seven expansive, original works from Parker that combine Latin jazz and chamber jazz elements, infused with rhythmic intrigue and influences from multiple global diasporas. The pieces are meticulously-sculpted, ranging from the mercurial and kinetic, to the reflective and serene. Parker’s deft, sensitive, and elastic approach drives the pieces, with her group of accomplished musicians infusing it with their unique voices. Notably, the album features Paul McCandless on sax and Mark Walker on drums. Both are members of Oregon and this recording reflects the first time the two have recorded together in many years. The intricate interplay and chemistry they share in Oregon continues on this LP. In fact, Oregon fans will find a lot to enjoy on it, as it explores complementary, cross-cultural territory. Matthew Montfort is another key presence, with his evocative scalloped fretboard and electric guitar work underpinning the majority of tracks. You’ll also hear superb performances from bassists Gary Brown, Kash Killion, and Sascha Jacobsen on the album.
